The authors photograph and describe over thirty of Edna Walling's gardens. The chapters on particular gardens are illustrated with contemporary colour photographs as well as reproductions of the garden plans. There is a short chapter covering Walling's life, and current and past owners of the gardens contribute their recollections and impressions of history.
