"But I had nearly forgotten to tell you about the plants that particularly attracted me in the nursery this morning. There was the American hornbeam, Carpinus americana, looking exquisite in its autumn gown; the branchlets are almost wiry in their slenderness, and the autumn colouring is simply delightful - some of the leaves are yellow, some bright red, and others varying shades of these two colours...It is not a very large tree and quite appropriate to the medium-sized garden."
