An offer by Walling to become working partners was turned down by Emily Gibson, the reason is unknown. [Emily Gibson (nee Grassick) was a well regarded, professional landscape gardener and a peer of Edna Walling's.]
Gibson:
worked for a period at the offices of the famous landscape architects, Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin,
wrote for "The Argus" and "The Australasian" papers,
lectured at Burnley Horticultural College, and
worked in England for the prestigious company of Milner, White and Son.
Her design work concentrated on large-scale industrial landscapes and includes:
the Shell Refinery at Geelong,
the Vacuum Oil Terminal at Altona,
the Glaxo factory at Bayswater,
the Maribyrnong Migrant Hostel, and
St Hilda's College gardens.
Emily Gibson's landscape drawings are held in the Stephenson and Turner Archive, La Trobe Picture Collection, State Library of Victoria. Contact Pictures at the State Library of Victoria to view these works.
