Lewis Mumford wrote about urban ecology, the development of cities and human behaviour in urban environments. Walling read two of his books, "The Culture of Cities" and "The Image of the City" and quoted him in several articles.

Lewis Mumford was:

    -a philosopher, writer, historian, architectural critic and urban planner,

    -an academic at Stanford University, and later M.I.T.,

    -a campaigner against roadways through Washington Square Park and American involvement in the Vietnam war,

    -awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the National Medal for Literature, the Prix Mondial del Duca and the National Medal of Arts, and made honorary Knight Commander of the British Empire.
