Walling was ardent about conservation as this 'conversation with a lady' shows:
...It was clear that she saw no obligation upon herself in the matter of tree planting, so I continued, warming to the subject of timber planting as a social obligation. "Have you ever stopped to realise that every hour of the day you are dependent upon wood in some shape or form?" No reply, which meant she had not. "And that you take your frequent walking and camping expeditions where you may enjoy the trees natural to the countryside? And have you ever done a single thing about their preservation and propagation, or have you just taken all you can get?"
