I have come to the conclusion that very small gardens have to be constructed; constructional features such as low walls, wall fountains, steps and pools are more vitally important there than in an expansive garden where long vistas, variety in foliage texture, wide sweeps of lawn and grassy glade are more easily achieved. It is all very well to lay out a simple rustic little garden that is a delight while it is young and fresh, but the time comes when such a garden 'goes off', and then you look around for another scheme that will never let you down. After the architect and the interior decorator have finished with the client, the garden designer starts the battle of trying to achieve a fitting garden with what is left. The client is still there, but the funds, alas!
