Crataegus durobrivensis! In spite of his name what an adorable little American tree it is. The fruit is a pinkish red and of a shape that is like a dear little apple. They are about half an inch across and hung in clusters. There are such a lot of these American hawthorns and they are all so fascinating. The best-known is the Washington thorn, and even that brilliantly autumn-coloured little tree is not as well known as one would imagine. The fruits of the Washington thorn are much smaller than C. durobrivensis, about the size of the ordinary hawthorn, but much more brilliant red in colour. Crataegus splendens colours wonderfully, too, and like all the others is a most shapely little tree.
